The coastal roads and tucked beaches are truly mesmerising. Combined with the openharted culture, iconic history and fabulous kitchen this road trip in Portugal is one of our favorites.

Departing from Lisbon you cross the Tagus river over the ponte 25 de Abril bridge. In a matter of minutes you leave the highway and embark the Setúbal ferry towards the Tróia Peninsula.  Make sure you get yourself a choco frito before you enter the ferry and try to spot the dolphins.

Sublime Comporta

Stay — Sublime Comporta

“The secret garden of Europe”

It does not come as a surprise that sustainability is part of Sublime Comporta’s DNA given the solar panels, sustainability certifications, organic produce and partnership with local fishermen. Cocoon Suits and Lodges is another good option in the area - especially if you’re travelling with your family.

Eat — Restaurant Tasca do Celso

Driving further southwards down the Atlantic coast you enter the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.

As you pass Sines take a quick look at history in the making as EDP coal-fired power plant is planned to close two years earlier than planned. Restaurant Tasca do Celso in Vila Nova de Milfontes is the best place for dinner. Friendly staff will welcome you and serve you the finest Portuguese wines, tasty Alentejo dishes and local delicacies. Make sure you reserve in advance - the restaurant is popular. After you have eaten here you know why.

Do — Surf at Bordeira and Amado beaches

On a stonesthrow from the little village of Carrapateira lie some beautiful beaches for surfing. There is a surf school if you need lessons - and a surf shop if you need a new board. Depending on the wind and waves you will choose either Bordeira or Amando beaches. Emerge in the ocean and feel the rhythm of the water. This can be one of the moments you will cherish for a long time.

Hidden gem — Hiking near Odeceixe

Stretch your legs around Odeceixe. Walk up and southbound from the peninsula shaped beach. The first views are breathtaking that can make you feel the depth of the adventures Portuguese historic discoverers undertook centuries ago.

During the 3.5 hrs intermediate level hike you pass a variety of sceneries. Your last piece follows the winding Ribeira de Odeceixe. Share your picture on social media with the #LYjourney to win an epic Lightyear sweater.
